“If you don’t value your own work, neither will anyone else.”

I know a lot of people with internships are gonna debate this one, and unpaid internships are definitely in that grey area, but at the very least, when you’re not in school, and you’re trying to be a professional, don’t do everything for free. It doesn’t just devalue you, but the entire industry, teaching clients that not only do you not need to pay this artist, but so many other artists. With an art world like that, why even consider an artist who asks for payment?

I have thoughts on internships and my love hate relationship with the concept (mostly hate, tempered by my awareness of how much I’ve benefited from my own internship). The fact that they’ve all but completely replaced entry-level jobs in some fields and that this helps create a system where capable people in lower-income classes have a much harder time breaking into those fields just because they can’t afford to work for free or barely-anything…I could go on.

Putting all that aside, I wish I could tattoo this poster into the psyche of every budding designer, artist, illustrator, etc. You shouldn’t feel bad or unsure about wanting money for your hard work!
